How to Make a Complaint Against the Police

IF YOU BELIEVE THAT A POLICE OFFICER HAS VIOLATED YOUR RIGHTS WE ARE HERE TO HELP!

African-Americans, immigrants, formerly incarcerated persons, poor people, illiterate citizens and mentally ill persons are among the least likely to make formal complaints against police officers when confronted with alleged police bias, abuse and brutality/violence. Notwithstanding, the above categories of persons comprise a disproportionate number of police stops, citations and arrests let alone criminal convictions.

The Stono Institute for Freedom, Justice and Security’s Human Rights Education Advocate Project aims to provide a safe, secure and supportive environment to provide free or pro bono advocacy assistance to alleged victims of police bias, abuse and brutality/violence to: 1) File formal complaints and or grievances against law enforcement; and 2) Provide de-escalation and rights-based education and training. Our racial justice advocates are available to assist the residents of Paramore, Pine Hills, Carver Shores, Richmond Heights, Washington Shores, South Apopka and Hannibal Square to safeguard their fundamental human rights under local, state, national and international law.

Our Procedure for Filing a Complaint: If you feel an officer has acted improperly or otherwise engage in police bias, abuse and brutality/violent, fill-out the complaint form by clicking here.   1. We will assess your complaint and contact you directly about it.
  2. If, after a thorough assessment of the facts, we believe that your complaint evidences police bias, abuse and or violence/brutality, we will provide you with free assistance in filing a formal complaint against the officer(s) involved with the respective agency and other stakeholders. We will stand with you and boldly help you advocate for your rights!
    • If we believe the facts of your case necessitate formal legal representation, we will refer you to one of our partner law firms.
  3. If, after a thorough assessment of the facts, we believe that your complaint does not evidence police bias, abuse and or violence/brutality, we will provide your with free de-escalation and rights-based education and training.
